Installing Windows XP from a network. RIS, but not Microsoft

Troubleshooting

Here I will publish the ways to resolve the problems that might appear during the installation of Windows XP from the network. If you don't find the answer to your question, you can ask the question on the forum.

1. I install Windows XP, and I get an error message, "The operating system image you selected does not contain the necessary drivers for you network adapter. Try selecting a different operating system image. If the problem persist, contact you system administrator" (Picture 1).

Reason

Probably, the database binlsrv.py (devlist.cache) is missing the network adapter information. In the picture (Picture 2), it is shown that Windows XP calls for the driver with PnP identifier PCI\VEN_1022&DEV_2000, but the database binlsrv.py (devlist.cache) does not contain the information about the device with the PnP identifier PCI\VEN_1022&DEV_2000. That's what the note "Driver not found" shows.

Resolution

To resolve this problem it's necessary to find the driver with PnP identifier PCI\VEN_1022&DEV_2000 and include it in the database binlsrv.py (devlist.cache) with the help of the command infparser.py <catalog with a new driver>.

2. I cannot install Windows XP, I get an error message: "File pcntpci5.sys caused an unexpected error (21) at line 3788 in d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup\setup.c" (Picture 3)

Reason

Probably, the catalog I386 is missing the driver file (*.sys) for the network adapter or one of its components. In the picture (Picture 4) it is shown that Windows XP calls for the driver with PnP identifier PCI\VEN_1022&DEV_2000. In the database binlsrv.py (devlist.cache) there is some information about what driver should be used "[S] drv: pcntpci5.sys Len 0x15 (21)". But the installation program cannot download it and that's what it notifies about.

Resolution

Copy the necessary driver (pcntpci5.sys) into the catalog I386.

3. I install the English version of Windows XP, and after loading all the necessary drivers, the blue screen and the computer breeze (Picture 5).

Reason

The most likely reason for computer freezing at this stage is related to the impossibility anonymous connection to the shared resource, noted in the file winnt.sif in the parameter SetupSourceDevice.

Resolution

It's necessary to make sure that the user record Guest is turned on. It's also important to make sure that in Local Security Policy it is called for through the command mmc %SystemRoot%\system32\secpol.msc, the access to the computer is allowed from the network for the user Guest. One of the points that limit the access and set as a default setting is Local Policies -> User Right Assignments -> Deny access to the computer from the network.

4. After downloading all the necessary drivers, Windows XP installation is stopped by a BSOD (blue screen of death) PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED (STOP 0x0000006B) (Picture 6).

Reason

Probably, Windows XP installation is located in the partition with the NTFS file system. In the features of Security catalog the permission for the group Everyone for reading is missing.

Resolution

Allow reading the group Everyone in Security catalog features.
